Pessoa has been competing since age nine and won his first title at 12 when he earned the championship in the Pony Class in a competition in Belgium. At the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, he was the youngest rider to participate and finished ninth; he earned a team bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics; a team bronze in Sydney in 2000; and he is the reigning Olympic champion from the Athens games. He is a Pan Am Games gold medallist (1995), a world champion (1998) and a three-time World Cup champion (1998, 1999, 2000). In 2004, Pessoa won six Grand Prix events.
