As the name suggests, grooms do indeed “groom” the horses –
but they do so much more. The groom is the special attendant to a horse, and
will form a personal relationship with it. The groom provides moral support
and, of course, horse-treats. During a competition, the groom will even go so
far as to sleep in the stable with the horse. When a horse travels by air, the
groom will accompany the horse in the plane’s cargo hold in a special
container. Throughout the flight, the groom will tend to and comfort the horse,
especially during the disconcerting phase of takeoff and landing.
